Hello Hyde Park Neighborhood Revitalization Plan
Memphis needs 39,000 affordable Homes. Mayor Paul Young has announced a goal of building and renovating 10,000 single and multifamily homes by 2030. Hyde Park is a historic North Memphis neighborhood that has experienced decades of disinvestment, but also has been strengthened by deep community roots, committed leaders and engaged residents. The Hello Hyde Park Revitalization Plan advances a resident-driven vision to: (1) Leverage Public Land for Community Benefit by target 200+ Shelby County Tax-Sales parcels for infill development at minimal cost using the Building Home Program. (2) Improve Essential Housing Quality by turning vacant lots into new homes with durable, energy-efficient construction. (3) Support Homeownership by providing Home Buyer Education, financial readiness support, and identifying incentive packages to make ownership attainable. (4) Diversify Housing Stock by Introducing “Missing Middle” housing types that fit the neighborhood scale and meet affordability needs. (5) Build a Community-Led Development Model by partnering The City of Memphis, Regional funders, Residents, and local builders, to ensure development benefits the Hyde Park community. The plan is a pilot strategy for utilizing the new Building Home program legislation to revitalize neighborhoods throughout Shelby County.
"Safe, stable housing is more than a roof over your head. When families lack quality housing, it affects their health, stability, and overall well-being.That’s why this work must focus not only on building affordable homes, but also on increasing incomes so families can truly afford them. When housing is secure, families are better positioned to grow, succeed, and build a stronger future."
– Mayor Paul A. Young, 65th Mayor of Memphis
