Teach for America

Teach for America (TFA) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization focused on quality education that’s affordable to everyone. TFA volunteers teach in low-income urban neighborhoods for two years of service. TFA selected Self+Tucker Architects as the design team for the relocation of their office at Toyota Plaza to the new Crosstown Concourse. The design included a reduction of 5,486 RSF of office space and intertwined TFA’s core values of respect and humility with fresh, modern, and updated design features. Recycled materials were used in the furniture, steel countertops, and the finishes have recycled content. Other features such as the plywood panels and concrete floors were preserved in raw form. Energy efficient fixtures and the use of non-VOC paints helped to maximize daylight and allow for more natural light to occupy the space. Recycling stations were also added as a feature. A new concept called “hoteling” was incorporated into the design to allow for more flexibility as it relates to how the space is used and when it’s available to staff, volunteers, and trainees.

"Our portfolio spreads right across the country so I get to work with numerous architectural firms both big and small so there is often a measure of “keeping your fingers” crossed and hoping for the best. Thankfully in Memphis that wasn’t a problem as Self & Tucker were the right choice! "
